GARNETT — Garnett city commissioners have agreed to consider ending restrictions against pit bulls and other so-called aggressive dog breeds. The Anderson County Review reported commissioners recently heard from Garnett residents, veterinarians and animal welfare advocates who said that such restrictions make little sense and are no guarantee against dog attacks. The discussion was prompted by Ken Amaya of Garnett who wanted to adopt a dog from an animal shelter but would be banned by the city ordinance. Garnett has a good vicious-animal ordinance but the ban against pit bulls and Rottweilers isn’t effective, said Katie Barnett, of Best Friends Animal Society, Topeka. She and others urged commissioners to end the ban but keep the rest of the ordinance. Commissioners agreed to consider ending the ban. The city passed its ban in 1998 after a wave of dog attacks across the nation and state. City manager Joyce Martin said there were no attacks in Garnett, but commissioners at the time wanted to be proactive.
