OTTAWA — A man kept a house fire from getting worse Monday night. Natural gas leaking from a gas line to the hot water heater ignited, starting a fire in the basement in the house at 711 S. Tremont, Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner said. The man reacted by dashing into the basement, turning off the natural gas and then using a dry-powder extinguisher to put out the fire when firefighters arrived, Carner said. The man went back into the house to fight the fire, which Carner said he doesn’t recommend. It’s safer to wait outside for firefighters, he said. However, in this case, once he went back into the house, the man did all the right things in fighting the fire and the outcome was a success, he said. There were no injuries, and the smoke detectors were activated, Carner said. The damage was estimated at approximately $1,750.
