BALDWIN CITY – U.S. 56 west of Baldwin City was closed Sunday evening because of a series of grass fires. Firefighters from Douglas, Franklin and Johnson counties battled what became three different fires. There was no immediate word on the extent of damaged although firefighters said no structures were damaged. Nor was there immediate word on what caused the fire but firefighters said the high temperatures and dry conditions accelerated the fires.
