PAOLA — The Miami County candidates forum will be Tuesday night from 6:30 to 9 at the Paola Community Center. Candidates in contested primary races will be asked a set group of questions, as well as those submitted by the audience. Contested area races include the Kansas Senate District 12, where Caryn Tyson, Parker, faces John Coen, Wellsville, for the Republican nomination. The winner faces Democrat Denise Cassells of Mound City. The district covers most of southern Miami County, as well as Franklin, Anderson, Linn, Allen and parts of Bourbon counties. In Senate District 37, Pat Apple of Louisburg, who was redistricted out of the 12th; Daniel Campbell of Paola and state Rep. Charlotte O’Hara of Overland Park, are seeking the Republican nomination. No Democrat filed. That district covers northern Miami County and southern Johnson County. Miami County Sheriff Frank Kelly is being challenged by Bob Ward of Rantoul for the Republican nomination. There is no Democrat in that race. In Miami County Commission District 3, incumbent George Pretz of Osawatomie is being challenged by Dan Macek of Osawatomie, Richard Kirkpatrick of Osawatomie and Amy Barenklau of Osawatomie for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Democrat Will Cutburth of Osawatomie. The forum is sponsored by Miami County Newspapers and the Paola, Osawatomie and Louisburg chambers of commerce.
