OTTAWA — A grass fire burned about seven acres along and in the median strip of I-35 southwest of Ottawa this afternoon, spreading smoke across the highway. Law enforcement officers were standing by to keep one lane closed for fire trucks and were ready to close the interstate and detour traffic, county fire marshal Alan Radcliffe said. However, Radcliffe said he didn’t think that was done, or if it was for just a few minutes. Today’s is latest in a long series of grass fires that have overtaxed rural volunteer fire departments this month, and the second in three days. Monday afternoon’s fire southeast of Ottawa remains under investigation. The fast-moving grass and timber fire forced the evacuation of people living in seven homes along Nevada Terrace, he said. Others along Labette Road were alerted to be prepared to move, he said. No structures were damaged but one fire went completely around one house, burning all the way up to the foundation, he said.
