OTTAWA — Shelby Ferguson of Ottawa was one of a handful of 4-hers preparing her animals for the 147th annual Franklin County Fair this morning. She was spraying down flooring for one of her animals’ pens at a livestock barn at the fairgrounds. Because of the triple-digit heat, Ferguson said she would be spraying her two head of cattle and a hog routinely and she’d be staying at the barn during the course of the fair to make sure they were surviving the heat in good shape. Because of the triple-digit heat, the check-in period for animals at the fair has been delayed tonight from 4 to 6, to 6 to 9, Jessica Coen, Frontier Extension District, said. The delay will create less heat stress for the animals – and be better for people, too, she said. There could be more adaptations for the fair because of the intense heat predicted this week.
