OVERLAND PARK — An Ottawa University student is in the intensive care unit at Overland Park Regional Hospital after back surgery for an injury he received in a weight-lifting accident at OU’s Hull Center Wednesday accident. Matt Bolig, a member of the football team, appears to be in good spirits and is planning to return to school eventually, said university Provost Dennis Tyner. Bolig was lifting weights with other members of the football team when the accident occurred, Tyner said. Trainers and coaches immediately called 911 when Bolig complained of back pains, he said. A Franklin County EMS ambulance raced him to the hospital and after running tests, doctors prepared him for surgery, Tyner said. He said OU coaches, team mates and administrators have been in constant contact with Bolig.
