OTTAWA — The Kansas Water Office is requesting that the city of Ottawa implement a “water watch.” The water watch is a voluntary measure designed to avoid mandatory cutbacks in the future. Although the triggers for water watches haven’t been reached yet, city commissioners are expected to discuss the measure with city utility director Jim Bradley this afternoon, city manager Richard Nienstedt said. Under a Stage 1 water watch, the city would ask residents to voluntarily reduce their water us, he said. Other steps include a water warning and water emergency, he said. Ottawa draws water from the Marais des Cygnes river and through a cooperative agreement, stores water in both Pomona and Melvern lakes. The city will continue to monitor the storage in each of these lakes throughout the drought conditions, he said.
