GOVE — One of the Eight Wonders of Kansas – the Monument Rocks — is on the auction block. The Hutchinson News reports that the nearly 13,000-acre Pyramid Ranch in western Gove County, which includes the Monument Rocks, is being sold in a private phone auction conducted by a Ulysses real estate company. The ranch also includes the sites of a prehistoric fossil find, a stagecoach route and a post-Civil War fort, with the graves of two cavalry troopers. The Monument Rocks are 50-foot-tall chalk formations created when most of the central United States were covered by a prehistoric ocean. Although the ranch and site are privately-owned by a Great Bend corporation, the site has remained open to the public and a county road runs through it. The auction continues through Aug. 14.
