Ottawa- Don’t burn your trash or throw a cigarette out the car…it could mean a year in jail. This morning the Franklin County Commission approved a ban on all outdoor burning. County Emergency Director Alan Radcliffe said conditions are getting dangerous.
“Things are getting extremely dry,” Radcliffe said. “A cigarette being thrown out in the road ditch is starting fires.”
Anyone caught violating the ban, including the burning of trash or bonfires, could be convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a maximum year in jail. Radcliffe says no houses have been lost yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time before someone loses their home due to a careless fire.
