OSAWATOMIE — A microburst caused extensive damage to trees at the Osawatomie golf course Sunday evening. Golf course superintendent Brad Waggonner reported a wall of white dust and leaves racing towards him while he was at the golf course at about 6:15 p.m., Osawatomie Mayor Philip Dudley said. The microburst destroyed about 50 trees, many of them more than a hundred years old, along the southern edge of the course, damaged outbuildings and overturned portable toilets and a golf cart, Dudley said. The golf course will be closed for the next few days as the damage is cleaned up, he said. The storm developed suddenly between Ottawa and Rantoul, Alan Radcliffe, Franklin County emergeny management director, said. “It surprised a lot of people,” Radcliffe said. Damage was reported around Oregon Road to about a mile and a mile-and-a-half north of Rock Creek Road, he said. Damage was reported to trees and outbuildings, he said. The storm went between Rantoul and Lane and headed southeast towards Osawatomie, he said.
