OTTAWA — Tonight is the second annual National Night Out in Ottawa. Based on a program created in Philadelphia to promote better relations among the community and police, the city will host a community-wide block party at City Park beginning at 6 and lasting until dark, Police Chief Dennis Butler said. There will be snacks, information and a chance to talk to not only police, but firefighters, and a wide variety of city and county officials and social agencies. But city officials will attend neighborhood gatherings throughout the city, he said. Last year, only one neighborhood gathering was held. This year, there are six schedule, and Butler said that in the future, he’s enough enough neighborhood meetings so the community-wide event won’t be necessary. Neighborhood events tonight are scheduled in the 600 block of Maple, Apple Lane, Ottawa Plains at West 17th Street, Mission Woods at 1600 Osage Drive, 13th and Redbud, and The Oaks at Canterbury at 10th and Olive Streets.
