WICHITA – In a bizarre turn, Wichita police say that a man they thought was a fake state trooper early Saturday morning turned out to be an Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy. The Wichita Eagle reported a Wichita police officer pulled behind an unmarked navy blue Crown Victoria to backup who he thought was a state trooper making a routine traffic stop on I-135 in Wichita. To his surprise, the trooper sprinted back to his car, flipped on his lights and sirens and sped away at a high rate of speed. After reports about an imposter surfaced, the sheriff’s office later said the officer was a deputy and was indeed called to an emergency. The Eagle said because the departments don’t have the same frequencies, the incident left Wichita police initially confused. The woman who had been pulled over also sped away – without a ticket. The Kansas Highway Patrol has been sounding the alarm about imposters after two incidents, one in Nashville in southwestern Kansas and another in Miami County where a woman was sexually assaulted.
