TOPEKA – Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor said he’ll cut Republican legislators some slack over a series of legislative dinners earlier this year at Gov. Sam Brownback’s Cedar Crest mansion. Taylor, a Democrat, said Brownback and legislators discussed state business at the dinners, but didn’t represent a substantial violation of the Kansas Open Meetings Act. However, he added that the dinners barely skirted being substantial violations of the law. Following more than six months of investigation, Taylor said legislators acted out of ignorance of the law rather than deliberate intent and he recommends they receive more open-meetings training.
