LAWRENCE — Federal prosecutors are seeking to seize and sell three parcels of Douglas County property owned by two Lawrence residents indicted in a drug-trafficking case involving 35 people in two counties. The Lawrence-Journal reported that U.S.. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office says the properties, including a large house under construction west of Lawrence owned by Chad Bauman, 35, and Carey Willming, 36, were derived from proceeds from drug sales or intended to be used to facilitate commission of drug crimes. Prosecutors also allege the properties were part of money laundering to hide drug proceeds. Thirty-five people in Douglas and Johnson counties, including Bauman and Willming, have been indicted in connection with the distribution of cocaine and marijuana over seven years. One defendant is accused of supplying marijuana to unnamed Kansas University men’s basketball players two years ago. Willming’s attorney has objected to the government’s request, saying Willming has not been convicted of any crime. The attorney says the house under construction and property may be worth in excess of $1 million.
