PERRY LAKE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has banned visitors at Perry Lake from using any firewood unless it originates in Jefferson County, where the lake is located. Firewood from ash trees is also banned. The Corps issued the ban as a way to protect Perry Lake’s trees from the emerald ash borer beetle, which was recently found in northwestern Missouri. Visitors who bring banned firewood to Perry Lake will be able to exchange it for native wood to use during their stay. The beetle, which reached the U.S. from Asia aboard ships, has destroyed most ash trees in the Northeast and Midwest.
