TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation said you have to buckle up when you travel Kansas roadways during the Labor Day weekend. It’s the law but it can also be profitable in some areas, KDOT said. Volunteers in Baldwin City, Osage City and Louisburg are handing out one-dollar bills to drivers who have all occupants buckled up securely in their vehicle this week and next week. Those riding unrestrained will receive educational materials about the effectiveness of seat belts and child safety seats in saving lives and reducing injuries. A KDOT safety belt survey shows that only 83 percent of Kansans ages 14 and older routinely wear seat belts — 36th in the nation. The national average is 84 percent.
