LAWRENCE — The Douglas County leg of the U.S. 59 expressway will open in a little more than a month. The highway should be open the first week of October, Kansas Department of Transportation’s Priscilla Peterson said. The contractor is doing the final touches, including some paving work, striping and installing signs, pending the weather, she said. The Franklin County part of the highway has been open for two years. The Douglas County leg of the project was delayed in part by the state’s budget problems.
