TOPEKA — The Kansas Water Office has declared a Stage Two water warning for the Cottonwood-Neosho river basin and ordered cities, rural water districts and other water users to have their customers make deeper cutbacks in their water use. The warning includes southern Anderson County. The water office report says many parts of the upper Neosho River are dry. The report also said that there is no significant rainfall, the john redmond reservoir in coffey county could be virtually dry – 5 percent capacity — by Nov. 1. The water office’s Katie Ingels said that is the worst case but there are some mitigating signs including somewhat cooler August temperatures and some rainfall that’s running into the upper watershed, she said. “Time will tell how moisture we get and how much water remains in John Redmond at the end of the year,” Ingels said. There is more water in the Marion and Council Grove reservoirs above John Redmond and there will be releases from the lakes to ensure enough water remains in the watershed, she said. Water from John Redmond and from the Neosho River supplies Coffey County Lake, which provides cooling water for the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant. Wolf Creek officials say Coffey County Lake has enough capacity to supply water to the plant for the future
