OTTAWA- The West Wilson Bridge will see new life as Franklin County was just awarded a 1.8 million grant from the Department of Transportation. The county applied for the grant earlier this summer. Franklin County Public Works Director Jim Haag says had he made a bet on whether or not the county would receive the grant, he would have lost money on it.
“I’m surprised they devoted such a large percentage of the grant funds available to one project, but I’m very happy that it was ours, ” Haag said.
This is one of just 13 projects funded by the Federal Government, and Franklin County received 1.8 of the 7.5 million allotted for all 13 projects. The Kansas Department of Transportation has work slated for Spring of 2014, however Haag says the county would like to beat that date. The grant pays for 80 percent of the costs.
