PAOLA – Miami County commissioners could place a proposal for a new jail on the April 2013 ballot. The Miami County Republic reported that commissioners will likely ask for a sales tax increase of 1-8th of a cent to fund a new jail. The county would also pick up an additional source of funding when bonds are paid off in 2015. The commissioners have not decided how much to spend nor where to build a new jail. A community jail task force says the present Miami County jail is too old and too small. The jail has 42 beds and Miami County has to frequently farm out prisoners to other counties.
