POMONA LAKE – Visitors flocked to area lakes for the long Labor Day holiday, the unofficial end of summer, this weekend. The weekend is traditionally the third largest of the summer for the lakes. There were lots of people at Pomona Lake, although not as many as the other big holidays of Independence Day and Memorial, said Aaron Wendland, federal park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Pomona Lake. There hasn’t been any problems reported during the weekend, he said. The weekend will wrap up what will likely be a lackluster year for park attendance, he said. The heat and drought, which statistics show is the most extensive since the Dust Bowl and the 1920s, resulted in lower lake levels and lower attendance, he said. The number of visitors to Pomona Lake will drop significantly now that the summer season has passed but it marks an active period for lake staff, he said. Employees will be busy pruning or cutting down trees, doing park maintenance and taking care of the land around the lake, he said.
