LIBERTY, Mo. — Authorities said a 46-year-old ottawa man killed himself in the Clay County, Mo., jail this weekend. Sheriff Bob Boydston told KCTV Channel 5 that Eugene Hilliard used his eyeglasses to cut his throat. The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that Hilliard broke his glasses and honed a broken part on the concrete floor to a sharp edge, Boydston said. A jailer found him alone in his cell, laying on his bunk covered by a sheet and blanket. When he tried to awaken Hilliard, the jailer found large amounts of blood, Boydston said. He was jailed last week on a charge of attempted statutory sodomy. Boydston said Hilliard was originally assigned to a day room but requested a move after other inmates found out the charge against him.
