TOPEKA — A former Topeka bank vice president has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for bank fraud. Jennifer Hughes-Boyles, 40, Topeka pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud against Heritage Bank in Topeka occuring last year, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Bank officials began investigating when they noticed that Hughes-Boyles originated more than $2 million in real estate loans in a three-month period despite poor economic conditions, Grissom said. Bank officials also noticed changes in her lifestyl,e including her buy of a late-model Corvette. An audit determined that Hughes-Boyles was providing false documentation to the bank’s loan committee on loan applications, he said. In one instance, she bought a duplex in foreclosure for $180,000 resold it to a buyer she had qualified for a loan at Heritage Bank on the same day, he said. The new buyer bought the property for $325,000 with a fake down payment.
