GARNETT — A Chanute woman who claimed she needed to get out of jail or force Anderson County to pay for an expensive liver transplant will serve the last half of her one-year jail DUI sentence instead. Connie McCormick is mid-way through serving her sentence for vehicular homicide in the death of her 13-year-old niece two years. Tests show that McCormick’s medical condition isn’t as severe as she claimed, Anderson County Attorney Fred Campbell told the Anderson County Review. Campbell said although the county will have to pay some of her medical treatments while she’s in the Anderson County jail, he called those health care manageable. Mary Jane Robertson was killed near Colony when McCormick ran off U.S. 169 and her SUV flipped end-over-end. McCormick pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal. Earlier this year, McCormick claimed she needed a liver transplant because of liver cancer caused in part by her past alcohol abuse. However, Mary Jane Robertson’s sisters argued her health claim was merely a ploy to get out of jail – one they said she had used before.
