BALDWIN CITY — Baker business and economics professor Alan Grant placed first at a national economics teaching competition. The contest sponsored by Cengage Learning focuses on the use of innovative teaching techniques at the introductory level. At Baker, Grant teaches the class “The Economics of Social Issues,” which is geared to non-economics students. He said he uses game theory and hands-on collective-action experiments to teach the class. Past simulations of certain social problems have been used to show why whooping cough cases have skyrocketed, why people pollute, the failure of Communism, and the difficulty of finding organ donors. Grant will receive a $2,000 prize, and an additional $2,000 grant will go to Baker’s business and economics department.
