BALDWIN CITY — Author Warren St. John will be at Baker’s Rice Auditorium Monday night at 8 to discuss his book “Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference” and sign copies of the bestseller. His book is about Clarkston, Ga., a typical southern town until it was designated a refugee settlement center in the 1990s, and the tensions that created. Clarkston became the first Aamerican home for scores of families fleeing from the world’s war zones — from Africa to Bosnia to the Middle East. His book recounts the experience of the American-educated Jordanian woman Luma Mufleh, who created and coached a soccer team made of Clarkston’s refugee children and kept them off the streets, and tranformed Clarkston. Baker is one of more than 40 universities that selected his book as a common read for incoming freshmen. All freshmen were presented a free copy and discussed it.
