TOPEKA — Hallmark Cards has announced it will close its Topeka plant by 2013. Operations at the Topeka plant will move to Hallmark plants in Lawrence and Leavenworth. Hallmark said the change will address excess capacity at its Kansas manufacturing facilities and reduce the company’s costs. The shutdown will occur in phases, beginning immediately, Hallmark vice president Pete Burney said. There are 1,300 employees at the three Kansas plants and Burney said the number of employees will be cut to 1,000.
