EDGERTON — Area economic development and government officials are eagerly awaiting the opening of the Gardner-Edgerton intermodal center. Officials are hoping for a big economic boost from the center, which will hoped to create hundreds of jobs among the proposed warehouse and trans-shipment centers. And thousands of cargo containers will flow through the intermodal center. But Steven Flynn, an expert on terrorism and port security and author of “America, the Vulnerable,” said those containers could have more than goods made in China. Increasingly, gangs are using containers to smuggle drugs and contraband into the U.S. and some security experts fear that terrorists could smuggle in something more deadly, he said. A federal law that went into effect in July and designed to check all containers before they’re put on ships to the U.S. is largely ignored, he said. Flynn will talk about the risks that containers could pose and what can be done to lower the risks during this Sunday’s edition of Community Perspective at 8:04.
