GARNETT — Anderson County Sheriff Jeff Hupp has reopened the case of an unidentified young man whose body was found near Garnett nearly 40 years ago. The Anderson County Review reported that the case is one of three unsolved cases Hupp worked on while he was a Kansas Bureau of Investigation special agent. Hupp said the National Center for Missing and Exploited Cchildren recently asked him to reopen the case again. Hupp sent DNA and other information to the center. The man’s body was exhumed in 2005 from the Garnett Ccemetery. Researchers took advanced DNA samples and experts created a computer-generated reconstruction of the man’s face. The man was found in a gulch near a Garnett area farm April 8, 1973. His skull had been broken by several blows to the back of the head. The man’s body had been in the gulch for two to four weeks and much of the evidence was destroyed by animals, the newspaper reported. The man was white, and about 17 to 19 years old. It’s believed the man was a hitchhiker.
