OTTAWA — Jury selection began this morning and continued this afternoon for the second trial for an Arizona inmate accused in connection with a 12-year-old kidnapping and attempted rape case in Ottawa. More than 100 franklin county jurors were summoned this morning for the trial of Ralph Corey. About 60 jurors were called for Corey’s first trial earlier this year. His first trial was declared a mistrial after a juror used a smart phone to research information about the case during jury deliberations. Today, the judge told potential jurors he would hold cell phones and computer devices during their deliberations. This morning, several women were excused after privately conferring with the judge and attorneys. Other jurors were excused because they said they knew the woman, who was a teenager at the time of the incident, involved in the case or her family and couldn’t render a fair verdict. Others were excused after they said they had formed opinions about the first trial after reading or hearing news accounts. Corey’s trial was scheduled to begin this afternoon.
