COLONY — A $4 million project by Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline is using the latest technology to improve safety for Colony residents. Colony sits on top of a natural gas storage field. Southern Star told the Anderson County Review it will drill two new horizontal wells outside the city limits to replace 18 wells within the Colony city limits. The 18 wells tap into the storage field and some wells are close to Colony homes. The company said the new wells will improve safety for Colony while making it easier to maintain the gas storage field underneath the city. However, Southern Star will continue to honor agreements with property owners who received free gas in exchange for having wells on their property. The 18 old wells in the city limits will be cut, capped below ground and abandoned. Southern Star’s Tim Meyer told the Review the new wells will be first directional wells in this part of the state. The project workers have never seen the new horizontal drilling rig, he said.
