TOPEKA — Franklin County Historical Society executive director Deborah Barker of Ottawa has been elected vice president of the Kansas Historical Foundation this last weekend. Also at the meeting, the foundation presented the Edgar Langsdorf Award of Excellence to Benjamin Goossen for his article “Like a Brilliant tThread: Gender and Vigilante Democracy in the Kansas Coal Field, 1921-1922,” that appeared in the autumn 2011 issue of “Kansas History.” His article was about the now forgotten and so-called Amazon Army – a group of wives of striking southeast Kansas coal miners who created a national furor by defying the Kansas governor, federal courts and the United Mine Workers union.
