POMONA — A 32-year-old horse in Pomona that had been the focus of a political and public controversy has been euthanized. Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry confirmed Monday that the horse named Jet was put to sleep. During the controversy which began in September, horse lovers and neighbors bombarded Curry and the county with calls and criticism concerning the condition of the horse. Curry said his department followed state law in dealing with the complaints. “On each occasion, a deputy had checked and found that Jet was receiving food, water and veterinary care,” Curry said. “Jet was 32 years of age and was unable to maintain weight according to his veterinarian; however, otherwise was in good care.” Curry discussed the situation during Monday’s county commission meeting. Curry said his department received more than 40 calls over the weekend about the horse. Commissioners also reported receiving calls. “I appreciate the concern that one elderly horse received,” he said. “… I would like to see this type of concern shown to the issue of elder abuse in our county as well. With this type of concern, I believe the weakest in our community would receive the care and need they deserve.”
