SALINA — Salina city officials and the federal government have asked for more time to wrap a proposed financial settlement for cleaning up contamination at the Salina Airport. Lawyers for the city and the U.S. justice department asked a federal judge to move a deadline to Feb. 13 for the final approval of the settlement. The deadline was today. The airport is the former Schilling Air Force Base, which closed in the 1960s. The city sued the federal government for the cost of cleaning up the leftover pollution. Salina says some of the pollutants include an industrial solvent that has been classified as a human carcinogen.
