GARDNER — A Burlington Northern Sante Fe train struck a car on the railroad tracks at Moonlight Road and Main Street in Gardner Tuesday afternoon. There were no injuries. The news Web site Gardner Edge reports a 63-year-old Gardner women was driving west on U.S. 56 toward Gardner when she tried to turn south on Moonlight Road. The Gardner Police Department said that because of bright sun, she ended up going on the wrong way on Moonlight Road into oncoming traffic. Once she saw her mistake, she tried to get on the correct lane by using the east-bound railroad tracks. However, her car wheels got lodged in the railroad tracks. When she couldn’t free her car from the tracks, the driver then fled her car as the train approached. Her car was destroyed. There was no immediate estimate of damages to the locomotive. The crash closed the intersection for about three hours.
