PAOLA — The Miami County Commission learned that if they propose a sales tax for a new jail, it must be a quarter-cent or more. The Miami County Republic reported that state law won’t let the commission put a 1/8-cent sales tax on the ballot as they had hoped. Although the county is paying off bonds that would free up about $1.6 million a year, commissioners are concerned that won’t be enough to pay off the bonds on a proposed $8 million 90-bed jail while dealing with other future big projects. Commissioners are worried that voters would reject more than 1/8 of a cent. However, without the sales tax, residents would likely pay more in property taxes for a new jail.
