OTTAWA — Two people were injured when their motorcycle struck a car at 21st and Princeton streets Tuesday night. Thomas Smith, 90, Ottawa was turning his car onto Princeton Street and when it was struck by a motorcycle driven by 25-year-old Shawn Atkins, 25, Ottawa, police said. Atkins and his passenger, Rachelle Hufford, 24, Ottawa, were seriously injured and taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital, Capt. Adam Weingartner said. Weingartner described their injuries as non-life-threatening. Smith wasn’t injured. Because officers weren’t able to interview Atkins, the case remains under investigation, he said. Atkins was driving a small motorcycle that wasn’t street legal, he said. It’s likely that citations will be issued although Weingartner declined to say what those would be until the end of the investigation.
