TOPEKA — Federal health regulators have given their OK for Kansas to begin its new Kancare program Jan. 1. The agreement comes after months of intensive negotiations between federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regulators and state officials, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer said. Kancare moves the Medicaid program for the elderly, disabled and poor; the and children’s health insurance program S-CHIP, to three private health insurance companies. The change should cut the state’s expenses in the programs while ensuring better medical outcomes for clients, Colyer said. Kancare will emphasize preventative care, he said.
