PAOLA — Miami County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jamie Schulte has been named Sheriff’s Deputy of the Year by the Kansas Sheriffs Association. Sheriff Frank Kelly nominated Schulte for the annual award for his handling of an incident involving a violent juvenile, the Miami County Republic reported. A year ago at a home near Paola, Schulte shot the armed teen in the leg after he charged Schulte and two other officers. It was a tough situation and Schulte made a difficult decision that protected himself and the other deputies, Kelly said. He has been with the department for 17 years.
