OTTAWA – An improperly discarded cigarette is responsible for a fire that caused damage to the exterior of the Ottawa University library last night. Occupants utilized a pull station to activate the alarm system about 7:30 p.m. Firefighters quickly dowsed the fire, but not before it did about $700 in damages. The fire also broke some windows resulting in about $10,000 in smoke damage. The cigarette was discarded in a patio area on the backside of the library and dry conditions allowed the smoldering cigarette to ignite some nearby pampas grass. Cedar Street was closed from 9th to 10th street while firefighters worked the scene. No one was injured.
