GARNETT — Drivers can thank ethanol for lower holiday season fuel prices, a Kansas corn farmer says. A report looking at the link between ethanol and gas prices shows that mixing ethanol with gasoline lowers gasoline prices, said, Dennis McNinch, Kansas Corn commissioner from Utica. The study shows ethanol cut gas prices by a national average of $1.09 per gallon in 2011, he said. Ethanol also reduces U.S. dependence on foreign oil. As ethanol supplies rose 9 percent in 2011, the use of crude oil as a fuel source decreased 3 percent and the use of foreign oil decreased 6 percent, McNinch said. The Kansas Corn Commission is based in Garnett.
