LAWRENCE — There’s a book drop. Now there’s a library drop. Lawrence Public Library officials tell the Lawrence Journal-World that the library will close for two weeks beginning Jan. 7. The library will move books and other items into a temporary home in the former Border’s book store at Seventh and New Hampshire streets. The move is taking place to allow an $18 million expansion project at the library’s permanent site at Seventh and Vermont streets. The library’s Web site will remain operational, and patrons can request books or items, Brad Allen, library director, said. No books will be due during the two-week period and no late fines will be issued during the period, he said. Not all of the library’s books will fit into the Border’s space and Allen said library employees will be traveling back and forth between the temporary library and a storage building to retrieve requested books. Construction on the present library and a new parking garage is expected to last until April 2014.
