PAOLA — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has published a draft of a new floodplain map of Miami County. The proposed new map came after new studies was prompted in part by the floods of 2007. About 1,500 properties in rural Miami County are affected by changes in the flood plain map and owners received written notification. The Miami County Planning Department, the state and FEMA will hold an open house concerning the floodplain changes Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 in the commission chambers at the Miami County Administration Building in Paola. Officials will answer questions and explain the changes and there will be stations where owners can check their specific properties. Changes to the floodplain map could affect building and development rules and flood insurance rates for some properties. Residents have until Feb. 4 to file an appeal regarding their property if they disagree with the map. Property owners can also go on-line to check their properties at gis.kda.ks.gov/miami.
