KANSAS CITY — Street cars could return to Kansas City. The Kansas City Star reported that downtown Kansas City voters approved a 1-cent sales tax increase and property tax increases in a downtown streetcar district to help pay for a $100 million, two-mile streetcar system running from River Market to Union Station. The streetcar district covers roughly River Market, the central business district, the Crossroads and Crown Center. Jackson County executive Mike Sanders told the Star that he may propose a broader county-wide transit tax to some of the burden on downtown taxpayers. The city has received about $18 million in federal grants and will receive about $4.5 million in water utility contributions. The city has pledged to contribute $2 million each year to the system. The city hopes to begin construction next year and start running the streetcars in 2015. Supporters said they hope the street car system will expand to more of Kansas City. Some opponents said they could file suit against the city.
