OTTAWA — At the request of city attorney Bob Bezek, the Ottawa City Commission will approve a court settlement Wednesday morning with a former city employee. Commissioners agreed Monday to put the matter on the regular meeting agenda for Wednesday. Lance Burroughs sued the city in federal court, saying the city illegally fired him earlier this year. Bezek said although the city had a good chance of winning the case, the cost of fighting the case in federal court would have been five to 10 time more than just paying the settlement. The city’s insurance company and Burroughs’ attorney negotiated the settlement. The city’s insurance carrier will pay most of the $40,000 settlement. The city would pay $10,000 to Burroughs’ for his wages; and the insurance company would pay the rest — $25,000 to cover a claim by Burroughs for personal injury damages and $5,000 to his attorney. Burroughs agreed to end all further action against the city and not to apply for a city job in the future, according to court documents.
