KANSAS CITY — A Miami Ccounty man pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion Monday in federal court in connection with his subcontracting business in Iraq. Gregory Light, 43, Louisburg; was a Kansas Army National Guard lieutenant colonel who was deployed to Iraq. After he returned to the U.S., Light went back to Iraq as a subcontractor with his own company, Lighthouse Consulting. While Light was a subcontractor, he received salaries from two other contractors, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. One contractor wired Light a monthly salary but the other paid him in cash, Grissom said. Light reported the salary that was wired to him on his tax returns. However, he didn’t report the cash payments on his tax returns. Light bought postal money orders with the cash, and when he returned to the U.S. periodically, brought money orders and stored them in a bank safe deposit box, Grissom said Light cashed them a little at a time so the bank would not file a report on the transaction.
Grissom says Light didn’t report nearly $314,00 in income and didn’t pay $81,886 in income taxes on that income. Sentencing is April 8.
