OTTAWA — A 4-year-old boy was taken by Franklin County EMS ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City after he was shot this afternoon at a house in the 1100 block of North Oak Street in Ottawa.  The boy was shot in the upper leg with a handgun, Police Chief Dennis Butler said.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene, he said.  The boy’s wound appears to be non-life-threatening at this point, Butler said.   Preliminary indications appear that the gunshot was accidental but Ottawa police detectives are continuing to investigate, he said.  An adult man has been taken into custody and is being interviewed, he said.   Butler said he didn’t immediately know if the man taken into custody was a family member.   Butler said he expects that more details will be released as more information becomes available.  A woman who appeared to be the boy’s mother accompanied him in the ambulance.
