GARNETT — Anderson County Historical Society president Dorothy Lickteig has stepped down after 21 years in the group’s top spot. The Anderson County Review reported Lickteig has devoted her time and efforts combing from old newspapers and historical volumes to tell as many Anderson County stories as possible. Her interest in history got started with a near-death experience in 1969, the paper reported. She was taking flying lessons and during one training flight above Kansas City, a helicopter taking photos of Kansas City dropped down onto the wing of her plane. Both the plane and the helicopter crashed, killing her instructor and two people in the helicopter. She was the only survivor. Following the accident, Lickteig decided she wanted to make her mark on the world. T hat mark turned out to be history when her mother asked her to find the burial site of her great-grandfather, who was killed by Quantrill’s Raiders in Lawrence. She said she was hooked on history after that.
