OTTAWA — For the second time in a week, Ottawa police are investigating the accidental discharge of a firearm inside a home. Officers were sent to Sienna South Apartments in the 900 block of West 17th Street Friday afternoon in connection with a gunshot. Christopher Dahlke, 21, Ottawa; had accidentally fired his gun while handling it, Ottawa Police Capt. Adam Weingartner said. “This is the second discharge of a firearm call in Ottawa in the past week,” Weingartner said. “In both cases, the triggers to the weapons were deliberately pulled; the weapons were thought to both be unloaded.” The bullet went through a wall into an adjoining apartment and ended up on the floor, he said. No one was home in the apartment and no injuries were reported. In the first incident, a four-year-old boy was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City after being struck in the upper leg. Dahlke was cited for unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits. “It is important for residents to handle firearms safely and to double check if a weapon is unloaded before handling it.,” Weingartner said.
